Alaska Gas Prices Top $5 a Gallon

Alaska drivers are paying some of the highest gas prices in the country. The statewide average for a gallon of regular was $5.06 as of Sept. 21, according to AAA data. That’s roughly 60 cents above the national average of $4.47. In Anchorage, the average was $5.03, up $1.15 from a year ago.

Prices have been rising for weeks. The statewide average in mid-September was nearly 20 cents higher than a month earlier, Alaska’s News Source reported. The increase has followed rising oil prices, with Alaska North Slope crude reaching nearly $97 a barrel in early September.

Those statewide averages may understate what many Alaskans pay. They don’t necessarily include prices in smaller rural communities, where gas can cost far more, according to KTUU.

Diesel is also climbing. Anchorage’s average reached $6.65 a gallon, a record high for the area and $2.59 more than a year ago.
